Campsite at La Couronne – Commune de Martigues

The village of La Couronne

Come and discover La Couronne, a small village in an unspoilt setting on the Mediterranean coast, right in the heart of Provence.

This small seaside town has everything you need. Beaches, cultural buildings, picturesque charm and conviviality.

You’ll also find a wide range of shops: tobacconist, newsagent, grocer, bakery, pastry shop, butcher, hairdresser, chemist, snack bar, car garage, fuel station…. and a market every Wednesday and Saturday. There’s also a post office and an ATM.

History of La Couronne

This small commune, part of the Martigues conurbation , has a long tradition of stonemasons, also known as “queyrouns”. It’s only logical, therefore, to find two major quarries where these workers once worked. The first, in the Couronne-Vieille cove, shaped the rock of the surrounding seaside, and the second, in the Verdon cove, is still active on certain occasions.

Several buildings were founded in this way. The church tower, in particular, bears the marks of the various stonemasons who contributed to its construction.

The village of La Couronne was also a major asset during the First and Second World Wars, as evidenced by the many blockhouses along the seafront.
