History of La Couronne
This small commune, part of the Martigues conurbation , has a long tradition of stonemasons, also known as “queyrouns”. It’s only logical, therefore, to find two major quarries where these workers once worked. The first, in the Couronne-Vieille cove, shaped the rock of the surrounding seaside, and the second, in the Verdon cove, is still active on certain occasions.
Several buildings were founded in this way. The church tower, in particular, bears the marks of the various stonemasons who contributed to its construction.
The village of La Couronne was also a major asset during the First and Second World Wars, as evidenced by the many blockhouses along the seafront.
